Sign.  We HAVE to hold the media accountable for perpetuating rape culture and victim blaming.

I’m going to sign this, but I do have some reservations.  I’m not sure exactly what the NYT author should have done here.  It sounds like many folks in this community really were blaming the victim and more concerned about the rapists than the victim.  So, given that, should the author have simply omitted the community reaction part of the story?   Probably not.  Should he have reported the reaction more skeptically, and perhaps found other quotes to provide counterpoint?  Definitely.   The linked change.org petition is a little too sensationalizing.  Hope it doesn’t end up being counterproductive.

This analysis still does a little bit of that, but it’s much better.
